Turtle Farm

The Cayman Islands were initially dubbed “Las Tortugas,” meaning “the turtles,” when Christopher Columbus first discovered the Cayman Islands. But in 1503, these indigenous creatures were viewed more as a menu item than as a majestic species of friendly creatures.

Since 1980, the Turtle Farm has bred and released more than 29,000 turtles into the blue waters surrounding Grand Cayman. With turtles ranging in size from six ounces to 600 pounds, the Turtle Farm provides a hands-on learning experience concerning this essential effort to preserve this endangered species.

The area around Turtle Farm is called Boatswain’s Beach and includes a 1.3 million gallon snorkel lagoon with an adjoining predator tank, separated by a glass wall featuring sharks, barracuda, tarpons and eels.

The snorkel lagoon accommodates numerous snorkelers and it is fun to try, but we love snorkeling in front of Harbour Heights best – at our OWN little man-made coral reef, 20 yards from the beach! Perfect for kids.

The Turtle Farm and Boatswain’s Beach are a slice of Cayman culture and excitement that you cannot afford to miss during your stay at Harbour Heights.
